Stay safe :)Įdit: Oh and also, you should be able to use the CD keys provided by Steam to download the expansions on Origin as well. Steam and disc versions are different and some errors may occur if you use the same folder for both installations.Ībout registry, it is pretty easy, but they are right that you can brick your Win10 install if you don't know what you are doing. Do not use the same Documents/The Sims 3 folder for these installs. Not related to CAW, but since you mentioned that you have Steam and disc install at the same time, I wanted to mention in case you didn't know. You can check the registry yourself to see if there are any keys that will be overridden. If I am guessing right, it will overwrite the already existing registry key for the base game disc copy you have installed, which will cause that to no longer work. The steps you are taking in registry is essentially trickery to show the Steam install as the disc install. Your disc install will probably no longer function. If you are going to go forward with that solution, keep in mind that: The registry trick is done so that the CAW tool thinks the Steam version is actually the disk version which is the only thing it can see. I have never heard of any other way personally. So I don't know how well it will function, or if it will function at all. I've done some research (not too much) and I found a discussion page on Steam's website that gave a method of allowing the game to work on the Steam version, but it warned about it potentially damaging your installed copy of Windows, which doesn't make me very excited to try it out.ĭoes anybody know of any ways around it or have tried updating the registry (as discussed in the link above) and have it come out successfully? Thanks!ĭisclaimer: I have not edited the registry to use CAW myself. I could use CAW on my disc copy, but I already have the Steam version installed with all the DLC, and I don't have any DLC for the disc version, and I would like to be able to use it on the version I use the most. The tool works as intended on the original disc version of the game, but I'm curious if anyone knows of a way to get it to run on the Steam version. So, I'm sure you know of Create a World, the downloadable tool (that EA still offers on their website) that let's you create entire towns with a UI close to what you had in SimCity 4.
